Biography

Composer, pianist and conductor

He studied at Conservatori del Liceu, at the École Normale de Musique in Paris and later with Cristòfor Taltabull. Although he started a brief but intense career as a pianist, from 1960 he focused on orchestral conducting and composition. In 1962 he returned to Paris to study composition at Schola Cantorum. In 1964 he founded, together with Juli Panyella the Diabolus in Musica ensemble, with which he released and disseminated avant-garde music, particulary that by Catalan composers. From 1986, he devoted himself exclusively to composition. His output included over a hundred of works that have been awarded international distinctions, such as Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres, the Tomás Luis de Victoria Award and the Creu de Sant Jordi. In 2004 he premiered his opera Gaudí at the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
