Biography

Conductor, promoter and composer.

He learned music from his relatives and studied harmony and composition with Gabriel Balart. He was active as a pianist, teacher and “cafeter”, but he is renowned for his task as a promoter, composer and choir conductor. He founded the choir Societat Coral Barcino, for which Bartomeus organized the choir’s season, offering concerts, sung balls and benefit concerts around Catalonia. In addition, he founded the journal Eco de Barcino and was associated with other choirs. His main output entails male choir compositions (with or without accompaniment), sarsuela and ballables as well as two symphonic pieces. During the 1860s and 1870s, he was at the peak of his career. His professional career was tied to that of A. Clavé, not only for their similarities but also for the rivalry that arose between the two figures.
