Biography

He was a choirboy of the cathedral of Barcelona, where he began his music education under Ramon Vilanova. He studied piano in Madrid and Paris, and was established in Lyon for fourteen years. It is probable that he received Franz Liszt’s advice in that city. He is considered an authority figure in Iberian pianism. He was the teacher of Joan Baptista Pujol and, from 1883, he was the head of the piano department at the Conservatori del Liceu. He composed more than a hundred works. He was appointed knight of the Légion d’honneur.
