Va ser concebut ja al darrer terç del segle XVIII per a substituir els dos teatres anteriors, la Botiga de la Balda i el Corral de l'Olivera, però les obres no van iniciar-se fins el 1808 i van quedar aturades per la Guerra del Francès. El 24 de juliol de 1832 va acollir la primera funció amb un espectacle que va incloure el segon acte de La Cenerentola de G. Rossini. El gran èxit de públic va fer que s'augmentés la seva capacitat i, finalment, es finalitzés el 1854 amb una típica configuració italiana. Va ser gestionat segons un model d'arrendament a empreses privades, fins que a l’any 1990 la gestió va passar a mans de la Generalitat Valenciana. Al segle XIX presentava les temporades d’òpera i de sarsuela, a més de teatre –entre 1845 i 1877 amb més de 50 obres valencianes estrenades—i molts altres espectacles d’escena. Pel que fa a la música, destaca l'estrena de El gato montés (1916) de Manuel Penella i les actuacions de concert, el març de 1845, de Franz Liszt. El 1943 el teatre va acollir la presentació de l'Orquestra Municipal de València i en va ser la seu fins a l’any 1987.
Soprano and singing teacher
Daughter of the actor and author Teodor Bonaplata. She studied piano and solfège under Llorenç Bau, who she later married. Bonaplata made her debut in Milan in 1886 singing the lead role in Verdi's Aida, a key role in her lyrical career. Her repertoire of dramatic soprano includes operas by Wagner, Puccini, Ponchielli, among others.
She consolidated her prestige on successive tours of Europe and America. In 1892 she returned to Milan and performed in Bologna, Parma, Monte Carlo, Naples and Turin. In late 1897, she embarked on a tour to Russia. She also visited the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires on several occasions, with a particularly fervent reception from the public. In 1902, she premiered Tosca at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.
In 1904, she left the stage to devote herself exclusively to teaching in the singing academy she and her husband owned. Among other disciples, she trained her daughter Carme Bau i Bonaplata.

He began his music studies under J. Cameno and P. Pérez i Gascón. In 1850 he started to thrive thanks to his Mass in D and by 1855, he was part of multiple chamber music groups. In 1875 he moved to Madrid, where he composed stage music and a Requiem for the funeral of Queen María de las Mercedes (1878). A year later, he returned to Valencia and laid the foundations of Valencian musical nationalism with the symphonic poems Es xopà… hasta la Moma and Una nit d'albaes. In 1882 he obtained the position of professor of composition at the Conservatori de Valencia, a institution he directed from 1894. Some of his students were Serrano, Espí, Penella and Sánchez Torralba. At the request of the later, four lyrical pieces by Giner were performed at the Teatre Principal de València in 1901. The composer took part in the gestation of the Banda Municipal in 1903 and composed the pasodoble L'entrà de la murtra for their inaugural concert. He also collaborated in the early stages of the El Micalet Choir Society and promoted other Valencian musical institutions

In 1894 he was organist of the parish of Sant Nicolau in Valencia, the city where he premiered the zarzuela La fiesta del pueblo.
In 1898 he began a journey through Latin America as musical director of multiple lyric companies, and also conducted a military band in Ecuador. In 1907 he settled in Madrid, where he premiered nine stage music works until 1914. In Buenos Aires he performed Las musas latinas (1913) with his own company.
In 1917 he premiered El gato montés at the Teatre Principal in Valencia, an opera that arrived to New York years later casting Concha Piquer. In 1932 he presented the opera Don Gil de Alcalà at Teatre Novedades (Barcelona), with which he paid homage to Mexico where he would move once the Spanish Civil War began.
He wrote over 80 stage music works, as well as very popular songs such as En tierra extraña and La maredeue
