Biography

Tenor

He studied with Gonçal Tintorer at the Conservatori del Liceu in Barcelona. In 1888, thanks to the support of Joan Goula, he made his debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in the role of Lohengrin. That debut was the starting point of a successful international career that brought him to the most important opera houses in the world and allowed him to specialize in the Wagnerian roles. On December 31st 1913 at Liceu, he took part in the first performance of Parsifal beyond Bayreuth. He also performed Italian opera. He retired in 1916 after performing Tannhäuser in Madrid, although he later performed Acté by Joan Manén at the Palau de la Música Catalana. In his later years, he devoted himself to journalism, teaching and publishing articles such as Leyendas del Santo Graal and Parsifal (1934). In 1963, the International Singing Contest Francesc Viñas was established.
