History:
Els Camps Elisis, situats aproximadament a l’actual carrer Mallorca amb Pau Claris (també coneguts com Campos Elíseos o Campos), era un gran espai de lleure on es desenvolupaven diferents activitats: sala per a concerts, cafè, glorietes, muntanya russa, entre altres. Dins del recinte, el 1860 es va construir una sala de ball, coberta amb tela, que ben aviat es va utilitzar com a teatre. En aquest espai Josep Anselm Clavé va dirigir per primera vegada una obra de Richard Wagner a la península Ibèrica: la Marxa Triomfal de l'òpera Tannhaüser. S'hi van oferir obres de teatre, òperes franceses i els multitudinaris concerts corals de Clavé. El 1876 el teatre va ser clausurat i en el mateix lloc s'hi va edificar el Teatre Líric, inaugurat el 1881.

He began his musical studies in Mahon, where his family lived during the Peninsular War. He continued his studies in 1815 in Barcelona with Andreví, whilst playing the piccolo in the Band of the Artillery Regiment. In the 1820s, he settled in Paris, where he studied with Pierre Melchor and Eugen Münchs, and became part of the Royal Guard Band. When it dissolved in 1830, he returned to Barcelona and worked as a flautist at the Teatre de la Santa Creu. In 1832 he moved to Santiago de Cuba to conduct the orchestra and military bands. In his time there, he created a music school and a quartet, and composing and transcribing music. In 1850 he moved to Havana and developed the same activities. In 1866, he returned to Barcelona, where he won the composition prize of the Ateneu Barcelonès, created the Societat de Concerts Clàssics, promoted symphonic music and organized the so-called Concerts Casamitjana in various gardens of the city. His compositions are mostly for piano or symphonic orchestra. He enjoyed a great reputation.

In 1869 he moved to Paris and studied under Daniel F. E. Auber whilst conducting at the Théâtre de la Gaîté. In 1871 he returned to Barcelona and taught at the Conservatori del Liceu, an institution he directed from 1893 to 1917. In 1881 he premiered the opera La cova dels orbs at Teatre Circ Barcelonès. Regarding style, he adhered to Meyerbeer's school. His output includes music for voice and piano (which he called simfomeles), operas, and religious music. He wrote several didactic works on music history and theory. Some of his students were Ll. Casagemas, J.Sicard, M. Rodríguez de Alcántara, E. Daniel, F. Marshall and J. Zamacois.
