Founded around 1850 under the initiative of the City Council, as a local response to the renovation of the Paris Conservatory. It has been recognized as a National School of Music and National Conservatory of the region. Since 2016 it has been administered by Perpignan Méditerranée Communauté Urbaine. In France and Catalonia, this centre was a pioneer in teaching traditional Catalan music instruments (including those of the cobla) in a conservatory. This institution has been key in the development of the musical life of northern Catalonia.
