Biography

Composer

He studied music in the chapel of Valencia’s cathedral. In 1776 he moved to Madrid and became renowned for his operas and zarzuelas. It is probable that he later studied with Father G. B. Martini in Bologna. Between 1777 and 1785, he settled in Naples under the protection of Ferdinant I. Later he moved to Vienna, where he achieved great success with titles such as Una cosa rara (1786) and L'arbore di Diana (1787) and became one of the most appreciated composers of the Austrian capital. In 1789 he settled in Saint Petersburg as composer and Kapellmeister of Catherine II (subsequently composing some operas in Russian). He is remembered for being quoted by W.A. Mozart in the last act of Don Giovanni.
