Biography

Composer and teacher

Considered a child prodigy, he received his first musical lessons from Joan Massià and Eduard Toldrà, and later with Joaquim Zamacois and Emili Pujol. In 1947, he offered his first concert in public as a pianist-composer at the Palau de la Música Catalana. In 1949, he moved to Paris to study with Nadia Boulanger, who in 1979 he succeeded as director of the Conservatoire Américain de Fontainebleau. He was also an outstanding teacher at the most prestigious centres in Paris: professor at the Conservatory of Paris since 1971, at Schola Cantorum and deputy director of the École Normale de Musique. In parallel, he devoted himself to the composition with outstanding works such as the Concerto for cello and orchestra (1959) and La pell de brau (1967), on the poems by Salvador Espriu. He was awarded several composition awards (Chicago Copley Foundation, Fundación March, Prince Rainier III of Monaco).
