Biography

Composer, pianist and conductor

In 1852, he became Kapellmeister of Santa Maria del Pi in Barcelona. His lack of ecclesiastical studies led him to resign from his post and devote himself to composition. His output includes zarzuelas, mostly premiered in Barcelona and based on belcanto style (Lucia de Lammermoor, Puritanos) and later, in models the costumbrismo (Los tíos de tus sobrinos, 1862, o Las mujeres del siglo, 1867). He was an honorary professor at the Conservatory of Madrid and, according to Baltasar Saldoni, he found Francesc Vall’s Missa Scala Aretina. He also composed religious and chamber music pieces.
