Biography

Conductor and composer

He began his music education under Josep Abarcat in Tarragona, and continued with Antoni Nicolau (composition). At Liceu Conservatory, he studied with Gabriel Balart (violin) and Pere Tintorer (piano). From 1902, he conducted the orchestra of the Musical Association of Barcelona and in 1911, he founded the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona. The turning point of his conducting career was in 1913 when he was invited to conduct the Berliner Philharmoniker with a programme of his own works. From 1920, he devoted himself to conducting the Banda Municipal of Barcelona with which he achieved a great artistic success. Dismissed for political reasons, in 1939 he was banished to Valencia where he founded the Orquestra Municipal of Valencia. His compositional output is varied and abundant and shows F. Pedrell’s aesthetic imprint.
