Biography

Composer and teacher

He began his studies at the Escolania de Montserrat with Benet Esteve and Josep Martí. In 1756, he was ordained a monk and, for ten years, he resided in the monastery of Nuestra Señora de Montserrate in Madrid. There, in addition to completing the ecclesiastical instruction, he got in touch with the musical circles of Madrid, strongly influenced by Italian music. From 1768 and until his dead, he taught at the Escolania de Montserrat. His work is fundamental to understand the Montserratian school and its stylistic development. Among others, he was taught Ferran Sor, Josep Vinyals and Maur Ametller. He composed keyboard and religious music including important masses such as Missa Alma Redemptoris Mater and outstanding music for dulcian (baixó) and bass, such as the Concert per a baixó (1790-1791).
